  • Flying Legends Dedication at the Dakota Territory Air Museum

    Celebrate and honor our military on the 4th of July with a fun-filled, family day at the Dakota Territory Air Museum! The museum opens at 10:00 a.m. and is FREE to the public.  Join us that evening for the dedication ceremony of the new Flying Legends Wing and enjoy the evening’s musical entertainment featuring Music Doing Good’s Voices of Freedom concert and dance to Minot’s ever popular Soulshine band. The evening’s event will end with the city’s patriotic fireworks display!

    10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. – Museum Open House
    • Static displays and flybys featuring the Texas Flying Legends Warbirds
    • Vintage WWII military & collector vehicle displays
    • Model aircraft displays & demonstrations
    • Kid’s Museum Scavenger Hunt

  • AirVenture Oshkosh 2013

    July 28-August 3 at Wittman Regional Airport, Oshkosh, WI

    The Texas Flying Legends Museum plans to bring an amazing collection of World War II aircraft to AirVenture this year and have them on display on Scotts Warbird Alley most of the week.

    A C-53 Skytrooper (C-47 variant), will transport a group of veterans to AirVenture representing airmen who flew many of TFLM's various aircraft types in military service. These veterans will participate in the popular Warbirds in Review presentations, click here for the full schedule of events.

    EAA will provide profiles of these "greatest generation" veterans in the coming weeks leading up to the convention, so stay tuned. The vets include:

    • David Born, 479th FG, USAAF
    • Merton Hansen, VMO-5, USMC
    • Clarence "Clancy" Hess, 1st Marine Air Wing, USMC
    • Don "Mac" McKibben, 352nd FG, USAAF
    • Bill "Tiger" Lyons, 355th FG, USAAF
    • Margaret Lawler, WWII War Bride
    • Joe McPhail, VMF-441 and 323, and later VMFA-214, USMC
    • Herb Stachler, 366th FG, USAAF
    • Vic Tatleman, 345th BG, USAAF

  • Wiscasset Airshow

    This FREE, family-friendly day is dedicated to educating, inspiring and creating community. “Wings Over Wiscasset” combines interactive experiences with history, aeronautics, music and science. Children and adults alike will hear presentations from and interact with the pilots who served our country in aerial combat. These pilots will fly a variety of World War II aircraft in a vintage air show featuring the Texas Flying Legends Warbirds. Other activities include a pancake breakfast, an antique car parade, “mad science” activities, and arts and crafts. The event culminates in a performance by Music Doing Good titled “Voices of Freedom,” celebrating the American dream and our shared history of struggles for freedom. Directly following the concert, “Wings Over Wiscasset” ends with a brilliant display of fireworks.

Monday, 7/29/2013 - 10 - 11 AM - Warbirds In Review
C-53 & D-Day Invasion with the Warbirds Living History Group

The Warbirds Living History Group joins the Texas Flying Legends Museum for a D-Day re-enactment. Members will paint invasion stripes and nose art on the TFLM's C-53 (transport version of the DC-3/C-47) Monday starting at 10 a.m., re-enacting D-Day invasion preparations of June 1944. Nose art from the C-53 Duchess of Dakota will be painted on while the re-enactors paint the stripes. During World War II, Murray Lawler named his aircraft in honor of his wife Margaret. We will welcome Margaret Lawler to Oshkosh with "her" aircraft.

Tuesday, 7/30/2013 - 10 - 11 AM - Warbirds In Review
Corsair, TBM & L-5 with three Marine pilot veterans

Along with the three U.S. Navy aircraft, three distinguished Marine pilot veterans will also be featured: Merton Hansen - Training with the artillery units of the 5th Marine Division, Hansen flew at Iwo Jima and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Clarence "Clancy" Hess - As a Marine pilot, Hess flew in the Pacific in WWII and Korea. Joe McPhail - Col. McPhail is credited with 240 combat missions and two air-to-air victories. He flew the F4F-4 Wildcat with Marine Fighter Squadron VMF 441 in the Central Pacific Theater, later instructing in the F4U Corsair then to VMF-323, the "Death Rattlers." At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict, McPhail was assigned to VMFA-214 "Blacksheep" Squadron.

P-40, B-25 & A6M2-Model 21 Zero

The morning session brings the Texas Flying Legends Museum's P-40, B-25, and A6M2-Model 21 Zero to center stage, along with veterans David Born and Vic Tatelman. They will be joined by Ron Werneth, author of the book Beyond Pearl Harbor. Born flew the T-6, P-47, P-40, and P-51 with the 479th Fighter Group in Europe. Also a photographer, Born is credited with more than 83 pictures published in the book The 479th Fighter Group in WWII. Tatelman flew B-25s with the 345th Bomber Group in the Southwest Pacific and later flew the F-86 Sabre after being recalled to active duty for the Korean War.

The 28th Annual Wings Over Houston Airshow took flight Saturday, October 27 and Sunday, October 28 at Ellington Airport with thrilling aerial performances, aerobatics, demonstrations and historic reenactments.
